Principal cellist of the North Carolina Symphony, Bonnie Thron, joins Naumburg Violin Award winner Axel Strauss and virtuoso pianist Dmitri Vorobiev in a performance of Mendelssohn’s thrilling C minor piano trio, once referred to by Robert Schumann as “the master-trio of our time.” Additional works by Shostakovich and Strauss kick off Vivace’s string festival in grand fashion.

British cellist Colin Carr has appeared throughout the world as a soloist, chamber musician and recitalist. Colin and his longtime duo partner Thomas Sauer join Vivace to present one of the most beautiful pieces ever written: the Rachmaninoff Cello Sonata. Recent performances have brought the Carr-Sauer duo to venues throughout the United States and Europe, including on major concert series in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Amsterdam and London. The Calgary Herald says of Carr: “Colin Carr has provided some of the most memorable performances we will ever likely hear…”.

Violinist Ani Kavafian has performed as soloist with virtually every major orchestra in the world. Join us as she performs Schumann’s best work with an all-star cast, featuring Vivace artistic advisor Jennifer Frautschi, 2021 Vivace Award Winner Jason Moon, cellist Natasha Brofsky and pianist Alexander Kobrin.
Schumann’s piano quintet highlighted his year of chamber music, in which he composed three string quartets, several pieces for piano trio and a piano quartet. The quintet, however, defined the genre that would later be championed by Brahms, Shostakovich, Franck and Dvorak. The work was premiered by Clara Schumann (and published on her birthday!).
